Matej Tupa was the son of Frantisek and Anna Klonz Tupa. He was born in Bohemia. In Bohemia, he married Katrina Malafa and with their young son John came to America. They first settled in Spillville, Iowa and in the early 1880's came by wagon train to Vesleyville, North Dakota.
Matej donated some of his land for the church at Vesleyville.
Matej and Katrina had eight children: Barbara, Frank, Josephine, Anna, Elizabeth, Joseph, Mary and Emiline.
