Born in Greene County, NC; was the son of Jerry T. McKeel and the late Cleo West McKeel, who died April 7, 2017. He was also preceded in death by an older brother, "Little" Jerry McKeel.
An outstanding athlete, he began playing baseball early in life and excelled through his high school years playing for Greene Central. During Walt's high school career Greene Central twice claimed the state AA championship. He began his professional baseball career in 1990 playing for a total of 13 seasons including three seasons in Major League Baseball for the Boston Red Sox and Colorado Rockies, primarily as a catcher.
He is survived by his father, Jerry T. McKeel of Stantonsburg, NC, and children, Cory Thomas McKeel and Abigal Ross McKeel.
