Helen R. Payne, 82, of Inlet, NY, passed away on January 1, 2019 at her home, with her loving family by her side.
She was born on September 14, 1936 in Barnes Corners, NY, the daughter of Leon and Irene (Stoddard) Townsend. Helen was a graduate of Lowville Central Schools and received a certificate for Business and Bookkeeping at Central City Business School in Syracuse, NY.
On May 25, 1957, she was united in marriage to James R. Payne at Saints Peter and Paul's Church in Barnes Corners, NY and shared a blessed union of nearly 62 years.
Together with her husband, Jim, they owned and operated Payne’s Boat Livery and Seaplane Service in Inlet, NY. Helen was also a Bookkeeper for Payne & Levi Lumber and BJ Queen Enterprises for many years.
Helen had a strong faith and was an active member of Inlet Community Church. She was also a member of Inlet Fire Ladies Auxiliary, Women’s Bowling League of Old Forge and previously was an EMT with the Inlet Volunteer Ambulance.
Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family. She enjoyed traveling with Jim, especially on RV trips to Alaska, spring visits for the month of April to Florida, and the tradition of going to Maine every fall. Helen’s favorite destination was Hawaii. She collected angels as a hobby and enjoyed water aerobics and yoga.
Surviving are her husband, Jim; daughter, Jody (Rick LeClair) Branch, Old Forge; son, Robert (Cheryn) Payne, Burlington Flats; Lewis (Peg) Payne, Remsen; Thomas (Anne) Payne, Old Forge and William (Denise) Payne, Old Forge; 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren; sisters, Joan Davis, OR; Jenny Young, Adams and Martha DeChristopher, IL; brother, John Townsend, Inlet; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sisters, Rosemary Scarbino, Alice Rush, Leona Nestor and Mary Edington and brother, Leon Townsend.
Helen’s family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Thomas Socash and the staff of St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Old Forge and Hamilton County Nursing for all their care and compassion.
Relatives and friends are invited and may call on Friday from 4-7 pm at Dimbleby Funeral Homes, Inc., 128 Fern Ave., Old Forge. Memorial services will be on Saturday at 10 am at the Inlet Community Church. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Helen’s name may be made to the Inlet Volunteer Ambulance Corps or Inlet Community Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
