Evelyn was born October 25, 1924 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late Harry Edward Exum and the late Lona Payne Exum. She and her husband moved to Lynchburg after his retirement from Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia to be near their daughter and family. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg.
