Bruce Edwin Bates of Pentwater, Michigan, formerly of Port Huron, Hart and Lansing, passed away of natural causes on November 6 at the Oceana County Medical Care Facility. He was 94 years old.

Bruce was born June 28, 1924 in Port Huron, Michigan; the first son and child of Melvin Andrew Bates and Mabel Mira Stanhope. He had one younger brother and two younger sisters.

After moving from Port Huron to Hart, his family settled in Pentwater in 1930.

He married Jean Isabelle Raymond in August, 1976 in Lansing, Michigan. This was a second marriage for both them. She preceded him in death on March 26, 2011.

Bruce graduated from Pentwater High School in 1942. He proudly served in World War II, as a member of the United States Air Corp (1942-1946).

An Arizona marriage took place after his military service but I don't have any details about it.

He was an active member of several local organizations, including the Methodist Church, Pentwater Historical Society, Pentwater Lake Association, Pentwater Arts Council, Pentwater Township Library, the VFW, local art classes, and Pentwater Yacht Club, where he was an honorary member.

He was fortunate to work in a profession he loved and was employed by the Michigan Department of Transportation as a photographer for many years.

After retiring in 1989, Bruce and Jean settled into a beautiful life after successful careers. Bruce truly loved creating in his art studio, whether it be drawing, painting or making prints. His lifelong love of photography continued and he converted half his garage into a dark room, where he continued to process and develop his own film.

After Jean fell ill in 2004, he was her primary caregiver until her death.

His artistic flair and zest for life made him a vibrant member of his beloved community. He will be forever remembered for his kind nature, big hugs and friendly waves from his front porch.

He is survived by his grandchildren Edward Perry III, Zoe Caldwell, Jessica Catt, and Chris Catt, his great-grandchildren Caroline Perry, Ian Perry, Zack Perry and Isabel Catt, stepsons Robert Fromm and William Fromm, and sisters Marian Hepworth and Marjorie Lentz. Also by his four nieces and four nephews.

There will be a memorial to honor his life in August, 2019 in Pentwater. He will be buried at the Pentwater Township Cemetery, alongside his beloved wife.
