Herman (Butch) Lee Bartels, 80 years old, of Edwardsburg, passed to his rest Jan. 4, at the Center for Hospice, Roseland, IN after a valiant fight with cancer. He was born Feb. 15, 1938 in Mishawaka, IN, the son of Ralph Bartels, Sr. and Eleanor Foltz. He has lived in the area his whole life and attended Mishawaka High School.

Butch married June Freeze in 1954 and they had two children, Terrie Lynn Whipple of Elkhart and Eric Lee Bartels of Grandville, MI. There is one grandchild, 2 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren.

He was a proud but humble man of precise skills, being a retired master machinist for Brown & Sharp screw machines, retiring from C D Hoyt Elkhart Division. Butch was adept mechanically, with the natural ability to work, repair, or create a solution for projects. Making beautiful stained glass, garden stones, and ceramics were some of his hobbies. He had a green thumb and grew a variety of flowers. His dogs were his fur-babies. He was selfless, approachable, and generous and didn't know a stranger. His humor was contagious and uninhibited. A pure warm hug was his trademark. He shared his home, cooked wonderful meals, loved music, his lake home, and danced his way through life.

In July 1967 he met and married the love of his life, Martha Irene Bowman Frederick. They were an inseparable couple. It was always “Marti and Butch”, never one without the other for 51 years. He said she truly was the love of his life.

Butch loved his children and grandchildren. He was the happiest when they were happy and successful.

Surviving along with his wife are his siblings, Ralph Bartels, Jr. and Jenny Kay Traxler, both of South Bend, IN. Family who preceded him in death are his parents; stepmother, Thelma Rayl; his sister and her husband, Mary Ellen and Dennis Kemp; brother-in-law, Rich Traxler; sister-in-law, Virginia; and daughter-in-law, Marcy.

Family and friends may gather on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019 from 5-8 PM at Hope United Methodist Church, 69941 Elkhart Road, Edwardsburg, MI. The Service of Remembrance will be Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Hope United Methodist Church, where all may gather for one hour before the services. Officiating will be Rev. Scott Otis, pastor of the church. Interment will follow at Adamsville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope United Methodist Church.

Arrangements are by the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg.
