Elizabeth "Betty Mae" Romaine Gartland Guthrie, 87, passed away Saturday, January 5, 2019 at New Albany Health and Rehab. She was born September 9, 1931 in Smith Valley, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania to Raymond Gartland and Edna Alexander Gartland. She grew up in a rural area of Pennsylvania and spent a great deal of her time with her older sister, Eileen. She helped her take care of her growing family of nine children. She went to work at a young age in a home for widowed ladies. She decided to take the bus to Myrtle, Mississippi where her Mother and two younger brothers were living at the time. That is where she met the father of her three children, the greatest joy of her life-as she told her niece years later. She went back to Pennsylvania when her father died to help her sister take care of their mother. She lived at her sister's farm because their mother had wanted her own small apartment and Eileen's husband and her brother, Ebe had renovated a small building on the farm for Betty's Mother to call home. Betty Mae worked as a cook for some time in a small local restaurant. She later went to work at Senior Folks Home in Orbisonia. Pennsylvania. She always had a desire to help older people who needed some loving care. She and her sister, Eileen loved to sew quilts and made many of them for family members far and wide. They entire family was avid readers and were always swapping the books they had enjoyed. She retired from Magnolia Place in New Albany in 2011 at the age of 79.
