James Lavern ‘Jim’ Chappell, 89, of Tahlequah was born April 13, 1929 in Wichita, Kansas to Freeland and Bertha (Ganus) Chappell and peacefully passed away Thursday, January 3, 2019 in the Jack C Montgomery Veteran’s Hospital in Muskogee.
James attended school in Liberty, OK and joined the United States Navy on August 29, 1946, receiving an honorable discharge on October 6, 1947. In 1963-1973, Jim worked for the Kennedy Space Center on launch pads and the Vertical Assembly Building. Jim was a plumber/pipefitter for the VA Medical Center in Muskogee and served as President of the AFGE Union when he retired in 1994. Jim was a 32nd Degree Mason and member of the Lodge in Merritt Island, Fl.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Christine Chappell and sister, Betty Slavin.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Genie of the home; daughter, Cheri Brandi of Orlando, FL; granddaughters, Kelly Felton of Clearwater Beach, FL. and Lindsey Ray Moskaluk of Orlando, FL; grandson, James William Moskaluk III; great-grandsons, Lincoln Maverick Myers and Nixson Merrick Myers all of Orlando, FL.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2019 in the Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home with family receiving friends 5PM-7PM.
A service celebrating Jim’s life will be held at 11:30AM Thursday, January 10, 2019 at the Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Delbert Hawpe officiating.
Committal prayers and interment will follow in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Shawn Slavin, Eric Slavin, Jeff McDaniel, Ged Wright, Clifford Ritchie, Gary Drain and Joe Grayson serving as casket bearers. Military honors will be observed.
The family of James Lavern Chappell has entrusted his services and burial to Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home, Fort Gibson.
