He was the oldest of 12 children. At a early age his parents moved to Illinois where he lived out his childhood. At 17 yrs he volunteered for service and spent 2 years in 92nd Il infantry. He got a honarable discharge at close of the civil war and returned to Illinois august 5 1865. He married Amelia Jane Ramsey on August 5 1866 and they had 8 children Edwin T, Emily Eveline, William Walter, Oscar M, Nora Belle, James Stephen, John Raymond, Elliott Theron. He died from Cerebral thrombosis
