A longtime Carthage resident, Mr. Bobby Dawson, died at the age of 82 at 1:55 a.m. Saturday morning January 5, 2019 at the Signature Health Care in Algood where he had made his home since January 10, 2012.

His son, Bro. Jackie Dawson and his grandson-in-law, Bro. Johnny Ray Brown, officiated at the Monday afternoon January 7th funeral services from the Carthage Chapel of Sanderson Funeral Home. Following the 1 p.m. services burial was in the Garden of Gethsemane at Smith County Memorial Gardens.

One of four children of the late Johnny Jordan Dawson who died at the age of 40 on August 28, 1940 and Clara Lee Gill Dawson who died at the age of 91 on October 11, 1996, he was born Bobby Glen Dawson on February 29, 1936 in the Plunketts Creek Community.

All three of his siblings preceded him in death; a sister Mildred Dawson Ingram McMillan who died February 25, 2012 at the age of 87 and two brothers, Marvin Wheeler Dawson who died January 10, 2005 at the age of 81 and Jimmy Gill Dawson who died June 26, 2011 at the age of 82.

Mr. Dawson was a 1954 graduate of Smith County High School where he was a stound-out member of the Owls Football Squad for which he received a college football scholarship which he chose not to pursue. In his sophomore year he was chosen as one of seven boys from the entire student body as an ideal male student.

On August 31, 1956 he was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, the former Monte Elva Moss. The ceremony was performed at the Carthage United Methodist Church by then pastor, the Rev. Ewing S. Weakley.

From 1955 until his retirement at the age of 65 in 2001, he retired from the former Moss Service and Supply Co. in Carthage as a general foreman.
Mr. Dawson was a charter member of the Carthage Full Gospel Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Monte, of over sixty two years are their two sons, Jimmy Dawson and wife Lynn Hogg Dawson of Cookeville, Jackie Dawson and wife Donna Lankford Dawson of the Riddleton Community; five grandchildren, Rebecca Brown and husband Johnny R., Matthew Dawson, Jesse Dawson, Isabella and Gabriella Dawson; seven great-grandchildren, Cooper, Parker, Tucker, Tanner, Asher, River and Shepherd.
