HAWTHORNE, Nev. - Kermit O. (K.O.) Esterby passed away Jan. 22, 2007 at Mt. Grant Hospital in Hawthorne, Nev., after a siege of bad health for a number of months, wife Mary at his side.
K.O. was born May 10, 1918 to Knute and Alma Olson Esterby on the homestead farm in Appam, N.D. He attended the local grade school and graduated form Alamo High School in 1937. He began a career with Hawthorne Naval Ammunition Depot 17 days after Pearl Harbor and became supply warehouse supervisor. He joined the U.S. Navy Seabees and served in the Pacific Theater.
He attended the School of Science, Wahpeton and Denver University pursuing a degree in accounting. He returned to the naval depot and finished out a lengthy career and retired from there in 1979.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Mary Harney Esterby, five step-children, and two daughters, Beverly Joanne Hillestad (John) Donalda, Alberta, Canada and Tami (Tim) Isom, Sparks, Nev., from previous marriages. He has 32 grandchildren including great-great-great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was a member of the local VFW and American Legion Organizations; enjoyed cooking, card playing and gardening. He taught his grandchildren to play cribbage.
K.O. is preceded in death by his loving parents and four brothers, Lloyd, Earl, Rueban, and Albert all of Appam.
Memorial services are pending and inurnment is to be at the family plot with the country church in sight of the old family farm; and rural school in Appam. A Hello and Farewell on the prairie covering 88 years. Inurnment date to be announced for later this summer.
