Velma Virginia Turner, 90, died peacefully at the Pines Genesis Healthcare Facility in Easton, Maryland.
She was born September 11, 1923, to the late Nola Thomas and James Johnson.
She was educated and graduated from the Easton Colored Moton School System. Even at an early age, Velma had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and was an avid reader.
The early years of her life was spent on the Eastern Shore of Maryland where she attended school and worked in the seafood and cannery industry. Velma enjoyed a close sister relationship with her aunt, the late Cornelia DeShields. Her life can be aptly characterized by the word, "Mobility". Due to family instability, few people her age has experienced the movement and relocation that she incurred while growing up, living in different places and with several different relatives. Her ability to persevere despite the odds, speaks well of her maturity and faith in God.
Velma married the love of her life the late James Turner, a veteran of World War II, on July 12, 1947, in Bellevue, Maryland. Joined in matrimony, Velma and Jimmy relocated and took up residency in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. While in Philadelphia, Velma was employed in the food service industry for the Horn and Hardart Food chain and the Federal Government. After retirement, Velma eventually moved back to the Easton/Bellevue area.
During her lifetime, Velma Turner reached out and provided financial and residential support to many people, especially, members of the younger generation who were pursuing an academic career.
She leaves to mourn a devoted daughter, Valerie Milton Bethel; cousins, Rowens DeShields, William (Effie) DeShields (caregivers), Denise DeShields Hardy, Drs. Dennis (Mary) DeShields; extended family, Gloria Courtney and sons of the late Sylvia Henry Thomas and a host of cousins and friends. Special recognition to the late Henry and Milton Family.
Services will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 11am at St. Luke UM Church Bellevue, MD with a viewing one hour prior. Interment in Richard's Memorial Park, Easton, MD.
