Marie Arlene Reed, age 92, of Fall River, passed away, Wednesday, December, 26, 2018. She was the daughter of the late Orelina Fletcher Shannon and John D. Shannon. She was the former Spouse of: John B. Reed. Marie was born in Fall River, MA on April 2, 1926.

A 1944 graduate of Dominican Academy of Fall River, MA, Marie worked as a bank teller for several banks and a credit union in Fall River. She also worked for a time in the office of the Fall River Health Dept. She eventually began a long career working for the Fall River Housing Authority, retiring as a Housing Manager. Marie was instrumental in re-introducing the Campfire Girls Program to Fall River in the early 1960’s. She directed a summer camp program at Camp Tom Welch in Assonet, MA for girls involved with Campfire, and later for girls at-large in the greater Fall River area. She was a Past-President of the former St. Catherine’s Guild that benefited the Dominican Sisters.

After retirement, she served on the Board of Directors of Citizen’s for Citizens. She was a participant in the Fall River Foster Grandparent Program for over 20 years working at the Wixon School. She volunteered in the gift shop at St. Anne’s Hospital for over 25 years, and also performed office work at St. Anne’s Hospital for nearly 25 years, working half days to the age of 86. Marie was honored with the Marian Award from the Fall River Diocese for her volunteer work in youth services as well as the St. Anne Award. She also received a Senior Recognition Award, presented by then-Governor, Mitt Romney, for her many years of service as a foster grandparent and a senior volunteer.

She is survived by: her sister, Sr. Mary Agnes Shannon, O.P., and was the sister of the late John N. Shannon; children: Rosemary R. Gadoury (husband Paul) of Westport, MA, Joan B. Rogers of Swansea, MA, Cheryl A. Reed and John R. Reed (Wife Lisa) each of Somerset, MA, Grandchildren, and she was the grandmother of the late Paul J. Gadoury; and 14 Great-Grandchildren and two Great-Great-Grandchildren.

Marie’s funeral service be held on Monday, December 31, 2018 10:00AM in the BOULE FUNERAL HOME, 615 Broadway, Fall River, MA. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Cathedral 327 Second St. Fall River. Interment will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.
