Calvin “Cal” Henry Miller, 93, of Elgin passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018 at the Highland Oaks of Elgin. He was born on December 17, 1925 in San Jose, IL the son of Otto George Miller and Cecile Picton Miller. Calvin attended school in Athens, IL after which he was inducted into the United States Navy serving his country for greater than two years during WWII. He was honorably discharged in June of 1946. Calvin went on to study and graduate from Mortuary School in St. Louis, MO. He was employed by several funeral homes before taking a position at the Bergan Funeral Home, Elgin. He spent the majority of his career practicing at the Bergan-Miller Funeral Home of which he was a co-owner. In 1980 his career continued as he managed the Bartwood Memorial Chapel in Bartlett, retiring in 1987. In retirement Calvin enjoyed working part time at the Laird Funeral Home. He is survived by his children, two daughters: Rebecca K. (Dennis) Lawton and Gretchen R. Yagow; a son James V. (Rebecca) Miller; 7 grandchildren: Amelia (Stephen) Klemp, Joshua (Jennifer) Yagow, Laura (Timothy) Schoenrock, Abigail (Joshua) Seltz, Otto (Melinda) Miller, Tyler (Enedina) Miller and Dane (Jesse) Miller; 13 great grandchildren. He is also survived by 2 sisters, Joanne (Miller) Durham and Emily (Miller) Franke.Calvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Velda Van Eman Miller whom he married on October 12, 1946; daughter, Mary Alice Miller and two brothers; George Miller and Norman Miller. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Calvary Lutheran Church, 535 N. McLean Blvd., Elgin. Burial with honors will follow at Bluff City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and on Friday at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of services. Memorial may be given to Highland Oaks, 2750 W. Highland Ave., Elgin IL 60124 or to the church.
