Marion was born on December 13, 1939, in Shinnston, WV, the oldest son of Frank William Russell and Hazel Armenta Hilton Russell. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Marion Douglas Russell II.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janice Irene Arbogast Russell; his daughter, Shawn Renee Lanham (Gary); sons, Shane Andrew Russell (Elizabeth) and Michael Dean Russell; grandchildren, Matthew Russell, Jenna Hayes (Cory), Christian Lanham, Marissa Russell Rexroad (Adam), Seth Russell, Erica Russell and her fiancé, (Joshua Moore), Ashlyn Russell and Zachary Russell and great-grandchildren, Justin Moore, Hazley Russell and Jackson Rexroad. Also surviving are his sisters, Loretta (Sonny) Harris, Esther (Ron) Rauer and Becky (David) Minor; brothers, Paul (Sheila) Russell, Arnett (Peggy) Russell and Charles (Tammy) Russell; special cousin, Carolyn Ayers; along with many nieces and nephews.
Marion was a member of the Jones Run Independent Church. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed cheering on Lincoln and North Marion high schools. He loved the Boston Celtics, Green Bay Packers and the New York Yankees.
Marion joined the UMWA Local 1501, District 31 in 1968, retiring in 1996. He was a dedicated union organizer who worked tirelessly to uphold the rights of workers and the Democratic party. Marion also served our country as a member of the U.S. Army for three years.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2019, from 1-9 p.m. at Harmer Funeral Home, 300 Pike St., Shinnston. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with Paster Jason Wojciechowicz officiating. Interment will follow at Lumberport Lions Club Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Marion’s name to the Lord’s Pantry at 77 Church Court Shinnston, WV 26431, or the Big Elm Elementary backpack program at 200 Tetrick Road, Shinnston, WV 26431, both sponsored by the Shinnston Lions Club of which he was a member.
