Susan was the daughter of Thomas S. Crittenden and Rebecca Drew Spratley. She married Charles in Richmond on 2 March 1866. They had at least six children: William, Susan, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Thomas and Helen.
She died at the Alms House of "Pulmonary Consumption," per the records of Shockoe Hill Cemetery, where she was originally buried, in her father-in-law Thomas Bibb Bigger's plot. Her remains were disinterred and moved to Riverview on 23 November 1898.
