Clayton Hill Johnson, the son of Reuben “Pete” and Mae (Hill) Johnson was born June 8, 1931 at Red Oak, Iowa. He passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak, Iowa at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 22 days.
Clayton was raised on a farm in the Stanton area, where he graduated from Stanton High School in l949. Clayton was united in marriage to Dorothy M. Rains on March 27, 1949 at Stanton, Iowa. He worked for Union Carbide Battery Company for four years and then began to farm. Clayton loved the game of baseball and played with the Stanton town team for 15 years. He was even manager for one year. Clayton was a sports enthusiast and enjoyed all sports, especially playing the game of golf. He and Dorothy loved attending all their children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Clayton was a member of the Mamrelund Lutheran Church, having served on their board. He also served on the boards of the Farmers Mutual Telephone Company and Stanton Co-op. In 2008, Clayton and Dorothy moved off their farm and made their home in Red Oak. Clayton was involved with the Merc Coffee Club and delivered Meals on Wheels for the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital.
Clayton was preceded in death by his parents and infant son, Jeffrey; brothers-in-law: John Carlson, Larry Shannon and Jimmie Rains; and sister-in-law, Marjorie Thiles.
Clayton is survived by his wife of 69 years, Dorothy Johnson of Red Oak, IA; sons: Steve (Arlene) Johnson of Stanton, IA, Greg (Carolyn) Johnson of Stanton, IA and Rick Johnson of Colorado Springs, CO; 9 grandchildren: Abbey (Collin) Heimensen, Michelle (Jeff) Sandin, Meredith (Nick) Hughes, Megan (Clint) Brandt, Eric (Kenna) Johnson, Aimee (Wade) Banning, Erin (Richard) Munns, Diana (Grant) Mandernach and Jennifer (Adam) Kline; 21 great-grandchildren: Allie and Leah Sandin, Neeva, Braxton, Nash and Adrian Hughes, Layce and Wyatt Brandt, Trae and Ty Gilliland and Thea and Treavor Banning, Macy and Brock Johnson, Clayton Sunquist, Hannah (Caleb) Williams, Drew, Kate and Gwen Kline, Ellie and Nolan Mandernach; and 2 great-great-grandchildren: Lillie and Greyson Williams; sister, Kathleen (Richard) Augdahl of Apple Valley, MN; sisters-in-law: Doris Carlson of Stanton, IA and Teresa Shannon of Glenwood, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
