“Toyota” Joe Hutchings passed away peacefully on Thursday, Sept. 20, 2018, at the age of 93. Joe is survived by his special friend, Sue Sumner; a son, Dennis Graves; six grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a nephew, Craig Hiller; and a niece, Janet Ball.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Nessie Hutchings; his father, Ralph Hutchings; and a sister, Bonnie Hiller (104419222).
Joe was born in Lehi, Utah. The family later moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he graduated from West High School. Joe was a decorated Navy veteran who served as a surgical assistant. Joe’s ship supported the mission during the flag raising at Iwo Jima. After his service in the Navy, Joe moved to Portland, Ore., and then to Longview working in the auto industry. Joe started the Longview Toyota dealership and later built the Kelso Toyota dealership, which was sold to Dick Hannah in 1999. Joe was very involved in the community and was a member of the Longview Country Club, Kelso-Longview Elks, and the Longview American Legion. Joe was a pilot, an avid golfer, and enjoyed waterskiing and snow skiing. Joe owned a number of businesses in the local area and enjoyed spending time with his friends.
A celebration of Joe’s life was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, September 28th, 2018 at the Steele Chapel, located at Longview Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Joe requested a donation to be made to your favorite charity in Joe’s name.
