Jo-Ann passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 23, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on Long Island, New York on June 11, 1951, she was predeceased by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph James Antonette of Salem, SC.
She received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of South Carolina, and spent 28 years teaching at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School. Jo-Ann was a much-loved and respected teacher of Humanities, and inspired many students with her commitment to excellence in all things.
She was active in her community and was an important member of the volunteer team that helped create Children's Hospital at Richland Memorial Hospital, now known as Palmetto Health. She served on the first board of directors for Children's Hospital. Jo-Ann greatly enjoyed being a member of the Sweet William Garden Club, and served as club president. She was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Her strong faith in God was the foundation of her life.
Jo-Ann loved being a wife and mother and treasured her family and a wide circle of loyal friends. She and her loved ones often visited Edisto Island, where she drew strength from the beauty of the beach and the creeks. Jo-Ann enjoyed reading, tennis, and creating a beautiful home.
She is survived by the following people: her husband, Randall Ellis Brooks of Columbia, and their son, Randall Ellis Brooks, Jr., of Houston, Texas; sister, Kathy Antonette Peterson of Greenville, South Carolina; mother-in-law, Mildred Redus Brooks, of Oklahoma City; sister-in-law, Jean Lucas and her husband Larry, of Oklahoma City; nephews, James Joseph "Jay" Peterson of Windsor, California, and Brooks Allen Richardson of Oklahoma City; nieces, Elizabeth Peterson Paul, her husband, Adam, and their son, Joseph Coover Paul of Johns Island, South Carolina, Dr. Andrea Lynn Richardson of Boston, Mass., and Karen Kathleen Richardson of Alexandria, Va. Jo-Ann served as a faithful godmother to John McLean Wolff of San Francisco, California, Benson Elliot Bagwell of Rapid City, South Dakota and of her nephew and niece, Jay and Elizabeth.
Jo-Ann's family thanks Dr. Mitchell Horowitz and the entire staff at the Duke Bone Marrow Transplant Clinic for helping extend her life for an additional four years. In addition, the family is indebted to all of her Columbia doctors, nurses, and clinics for their excellent support throughout Jo-Ann's illness, and to the nurses, technicians, and staff of Providence Hospital for their compassionate care during the last month of her journey.
