Sarah (Welch) Mellott was the eldest daughter/child of Francis Welch/Welsh (1760-1841) an Irish immigrant who served in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolutionary War from 1776-1781. After concluding his service in 1781, he married Sarah's mother Sarah. She died in childbirth when daughter Sarah was born. Francis Welch then married (2nd of 3) Abigail Roberts (1765-1814) who raised Sarah and with whom he had at least three more children. They were:

Coincidentally, daughter Elizabeth (Mellott) Whitfield (1806-1896) named her second son Zadock Whitfield after her Uncle Zadock Welch, Sarah's half-brother. Sarah also graciously named one of her own daughters Abigail after the step-mother who raised her, Abigail (Roberts) Welch, her father's second wife.
