John Maurice Swain, 87, Wabash, passed away at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, December 21, 2018, at Wellbrooke of Wabash. Son of Ralph Earl and Wilhelmine (Atkinson) Swain, John was born on May 13, 1931, in the home of his Aunt Gladys and Uncle John Swain in Gas City.

John attended Gas City schools and his first employment was an auto mechanic at Graves garage in Gas City. In October of 1950, John and two of his friends enlisted in the Marine Corps and trained at Parris Island, SC. After training, they were sent to Camp Lejuene, NC. In December of 1950, while on Christmas leave, he and Barbara Helm were married on December 30th. They returned to North Carolina and remained there for three years. John was honorably discharged in October of 1953 and had achieved the rank of Sergeant.

John and Barbara resided in Marion and he worked for Indiana Gas Company. Later, he became a professional firefighter in Marion for 20 years. He was also a glazier, working for Stewart-Carey Glass, as well as Marion Glass and Aluminum.

John and Barbara then relocated to LaFontaine and have been living at Wellbrooke of Wabash Assisted Living during his illness.

Some of John’s favorite activities included hunting and golfing, and he was an avid IU basketball and Colts football fan. He was a member of Sunnycrest Baptist Church and the Marine Corps League. John never forgot about veterans. He took it upon himself to regularly pick up patients at the Marion VA and take them to church services. His was a life well-lived and a life well-loved.

Those surviving to cherish his memory include his wife, Barbara, of 68 years on December 30th; daughters, Carol (Jim) Murphy, Marion, and Pat (Dan) Guenin, Wabash; sons, John (Lynn) Swain, LaFontaine, and Gary (Laurie) Swain, LaFontaine; grandchildren, Tyler (Brooklyn) Guenin, Urbana, Beau (Dawn) Guenin, Indianapolis, Brandon (Alicia) Swain, Wabash, Stephanie (Jeremy Jones) Swain, LaFontaine, and John M. (Kylie Hartman) Swain, Marion; 8 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Joan Swain, Gas City; brother-in-law, Earl (Nancy) Helm; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard (Marjorie) and Richard (Brenda); sisters, Juanita (Dick) Crouch, Rena Belle (Gerald) Kiser, and Inez Swain.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 27, 2018, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service, North Chapel, 1341 N. Baldwin Ave., Marion, IN.

A funeral service to celebrate John’s life will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, December 28, 2018, at the funeral home. Pastor Troy Bishop will be officiating with burial following at Marion National Cemetery.
