Ruby Corene Tucker Gibson, 98, of Statesville died peacefully at home surrounded by her family Monday, April 17, 2017. Ms. Gibson was born Sept. 4, 1918, in Statesville, and was the daughter of the late Emitt Eugene Tucker and Amanda Mae Haire Tucker.

She attended Wayside school and was a graduate of Cool Spring High School.

On Feb. 17, 1956, she was married for 54 years to the late James "Paul" Gibson Sr. She was a charter member of Broad St. Church of Christ and was retired from J.C. Penny Warehouse following more than 30 years. During World War II, she worked for the Consolidated Aircraft Corp. in Elizabeth City, installing radio's in military aircraft. She was also a member, historian and Junior Vice President of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Ms. Gibson is survived by one son, three grandsons and many special nieces and nephews, who were dear to her.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest Eugene Tucker, who died in 1943 during the World War II Battle of Tarawa, Harvey Jasper Tucker; and three sisters, Mary Edith Tucker, Tyna (Tucker) Smith and Alice "Christine" (Tucker) Cartner.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m., Thursday, April 20, at Oakwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Broad Street Church of Christ or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Iredell County.
