Private David Williams was inducted into the US Army for World War I on August 6, 1918, in Boydton, VA. He served with Company D, 545th Engineer Service Battalion, serving overseas from September 23, 1918 - March 18, 1919.

His son, David Jesse Williams, was born on October 9, 1918 in Southport, NC, formerly Smithville. They never met and never would.

While in service to the United States, on March 18, 1919, Pvt David Williams died of pulmonary oedema, secondary to pleurisy.
