Carolyn was born on February 25, 1953 in Illiopolis, Illinois to and Orville E. Sr. and Phillis Moses Holmes. She had six brothers and played a huge role in their lives growing up.
Carolyn was an active member of her church, where Pastor Kirk Henneberry will be officiating the funeral service on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Harvest Christian Center (2199 N. Water St., Decatur).
Carolyn was a very strong-willed and independent woman. She was a hard worker who made her mark in Decatur being the first woman to work for the City of Decatur Street Department, where she later retired.
Carolyn enjoyed spending time with her family, friends, her two dogs (Jack and Sadie May), playing spades, and brightening a room with her contagious laugh and smile. Carolyn (Ma) will be deeply missed by her family. Ma was the matriarch of the family, the cook, and the listening ear for most. Her love for life, music and generosity will be remembered forever.
Surviving are her four children, Jim (Jeanne) Holmes, their two children, James and Joy Lynn of Jefferson, Georgia; Lisa Staley, and two children Colton and Amanda of Decatur; Brenda Sarver, and children Ryan (Shelby), Jared and Kira, all of Decatur and Carrie Holderby of Decatur. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, Julien and Carmen; brothers, Robin Holmes, Mike Holmes, Bobby Holmes and Larry (Raisa) Holmes; her long-time friend Tim Bullock and several loved nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her parents, and two brothers, Orville and David Holmes.
