Shirley was born in Artesia, New Mexico on July 31st, 1946. She moved to Mangum, Oklahoma with her family as a small child. Mangum is where she met the love of her life, John Louis Hawkins, at the Tastee Freez in June of 1964. They married on October 31st, 1964 in Mangum. So eager to marry, they eloped completely unaware of the fact that is was Halloween. They eventually settled in Graham, Texas with their sons, Michael, Danny and J.J.
Shirley successfully ran The Health Food store on the square for many years, earning her the nickname Nana Yogurt from her grandkids. She was an active member of Oak Street Baptist Church where she taught bible study, and loved to sing.
Shirley was preceded in death by her mother, Beulah Graham, her father, Ruben Graham and her brother, Albert Lee Graham.
She is survived by her husband, John L. Hawkins of Graham, son and daughter-in-law Michael and Susan Hawkins of Deming, New Mexico, son and daughter-in-law Daniel and Dana Hawkins of Port Aransas, Texas, son and daughter-in-law J. and Erin Hawkins of Corpus Christi, Texas, and brother Chuck Graham, sister Billie Stacy, sister Bonnell Mixon and brother-in-law Earl Mixon, all of Graham. She has eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be from 6-8 PM Thursday, December 27th at McMillan-Satterwhite Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Friday, December 28th at Oak Street Baptist Church. Interment will be in Pioneer Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Alzheimer’s research.
Shirley loved fiddle music, ice cream and her family. She had a wonderful laugh and a beautiful smile. She will be greatly missed.
