Earl left South Carolina and moved to New York along with his older brother Jerry. He was employed by Bamberger Plastics in 1958 as a Chemical Engineer. He then moved to Paterson, NJ where he married Rosabell Wright. To thuis union, two sons and three daughters were born; Jerry, Brenda, Darlene, Stephanie, and Mark.
In 1970, he joined the Paterson Housing Police Department. He received numerous awards during his career. He became the Vice President of the Housing Police in 1978, and also became a member of the Police Benevolent Association. He was a member of the Brothers in blue, which was formed by the officers. On June 19, 1976, he became a Mason where he served faithfully until his passing.
On August 19, 1992, he was promoted to Lieutenant of the Paterson Police Department. He retired from the Paterson Police Department in 2000. His greatest achievement was being presented the Father of the year award by his children. This award hangs faithfully in his home.
He was a member of Holy Trinity AME Church in the early 1950’s under the leadership of Henry Broom Sr., where he remained a member until he moved to New Jersey. Several years later, he became a member of the Olivet Good Shepherd Church of Christ. He was baptized in Jesus’ name, and later was ordained a deacon. He served faithfully at Olivet where he played his guitar. He was a faithful member until his passing.
His hobbies were tailoring, fishing, grilling, and gardening. His true passion was his garden. He planted tomatoes, collard greens, okra, figs, pears, and persimmons. He shared the things with his family and neighbors.
He was a loving husband and the greatest father ever. His generous spirit stretched beyond his family, friends, and neighbors. He was truly an inspiration to everyone who had the opportunity to have known him. He fought a good fight. He has finished his course, and has kept the faith. Now there is a laid up for him, a crown of righteousness.
Leaving to cherish his memory are his wife; Rosabell, children; deceased; Jerry Sr., (Elaine, Brenda Baker, Darlene (John) Taylor, Stephanie Simmons, Mark Simmons, Shondel Douglass, and Desirae Douglass, all of New Jersey, his brothers; Jerry (Ernestune) Simmons of Brooklyn, NY, deceased; David Jr., (Alice) Simmons of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Lawrence (Viola) Simmons of Bronx, NY, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
