Martin was a son of Martin Reimers and Wiebke Katharine (maiden name unknown) Reimers. He immigrated, from Germany to North America, with his parents and siblings, Henry, Claus, Frederich, Jurgen (George) and Weibke (Phoebe).

Martin's parents settled the family in the Scott County, Iowa area. Martin struck out on his own upon reaching majority, and relocated to Porter County, Indiana, joining his older brother Henry there.

Martin went to work for the railroad ...

January 11th, 1890 - Martin, and his older brother Henry, were killed by a train. It was about 6:30 in the evening, already winter-dark, when they boarded their personal velocopide (one of those two-person hand-cranked rail-riders) and set out from the Wheeler vicinity, toward Hobart, to get their boots mended.

According to witnesses, a gravel train, backing down the tracks at 30 to 40 miles per hour, backed into/over them.

The results were detailed and sensationalized in the three local newspapers of the day - a summary of which can be read, on the Porter County GenWeb site - note however, that the "death notice transcription" there had a few inaccuracies in it; one being the date of the accident; the other being Martin's name mistakenly stated as Milton.

The accident occurred approximately three hundred yards west of the modern-day landmark, Sedley Bridge.

In Martin's estate paperwork, there were receipts from the coroner, LePell, for additional charges, due to special handling requirements (both Henry and Martin were horribly mangled in the accident) and a receipt from another man, for mechanical & paint work done, in building the vellocopide they were riding on when killed.

Martin never had the chance to marry - he passed without issue.

I am extremely greatful to three find-a-grave members, Linda Parnell and Ralph & Jackie, for going the extra mile to transfer my Porter County family's (my roots) memorials to me, so I can do them genealogical justice.
