Mac died in June 1950 at their cottage in Witham, Essex. His health had been in a poor state for some time largely as a result of his service in the First World War, and he had eventually become unable to work, and felt somewhat eclipsed by his wife, who had a very flourishing career; it's said that he drank too much. But he remained married to Dorothy to the end of his life. He was cremated at Ipswich Crematorium 12 June 1950.
