Born in Alexandria, Virginia, Lanphier moved to Springfield, IL, at the age of sixteen. He arrived with his brother-in-law William Walters, founder of the Illinois State Register newspaper, and served as his apprentice. When Walters died in 1846, Lanphier became owner & publisher of the Register until 1863. He was elected Sangamon County Circuit Clerk in 1864 and served two terms. He was also a Springfield city alderman for several terms. He was responsible for inaugurating the establishment of Oak Ridge Cemetery in 1855 and served on its Board of Managers for eight years. He married Margaret Crenshaw in 1846 and was the father of seven children.
