Statesman. 1st President of Latvia. He served from 17 December 1918 to 14 March 1927. Prior to becoming president he was a latvian lawyer and was active in politics including underground activities aimed at the Russian Empire as chairman of the Latvian Provisional National Council. He was then elected as Speaker of the Constitutional Assembly 1 May 1920. He is best remembered for his due diligence to international affairs as Latvia was now a fledgling young democracy of Europe. However, he still lead the formation of the new government spearheading passage of over 400 new laws. Later, He became involved in the founding of the University of Latvia and was a professor of public international law. He died before the expiration of his second term being the only President of Latvia to die in office.
