Elizabeth Carter-Stokes, 83, of Donora, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, in Humbert Lane Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre, Washington, Pa., following a lingering illness. Born Jan. 18, 1930, in Axton, Va., she was the oldest daughter of the late Everett and Viola Carter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. Stokes, and three brothers, James, Richard and Floyd Carter. Elizabeth graduated from Rostraver High School in 1947. Liz as she was affectionately called in her Home Economics class was best described as . . . neat . . . popular with her associates . . . fond of music . . . liked to read good books . . . ambitious to become an expert seamstress . . . had pleasant personality and would be an asset in achieving her ends. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother to her family. She was a member of Wayman-Quinn Chapel AME Church of Monessen and the former Quinn Chapel AME Church in Donora where she served on the Stewardess and Missionary boards. She leaves to cherish her loving memory, one sister, Brenda Watkins of Martinsville, Va., three sons and two daughters-in-law, Edmund L. (Darlene) Stokes of Miami, Fla., Jerome A. Stokes of Belle Vernon, Timothy L. Stokes of Houston, Texas, and Michele Lea-Stokes M.D. of Marina Del Rey, Calif., four sisters-in-law, Margaret Carter of Donora, Beatrice M. Stokes of Pittsburgh, Janet Freeman-Carter of Raleigh, N.C., and Gloria Carter of Indianapolis, Ind., one brother-in-law, Melvin Watkins of Martinsville, Va., six grandchildren, Jerome Jr., Janee, Timothy Jr., Darien, Cameron, Shannon Stokes, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 16, at the BEVERLY C. DRAPER FUNERAL HOME, 608 Sixth St., Monessen, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Wayman-Quinn Chapel AME Church, 318 McKee Way, Monessen. Homegoing services will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the church. Interment will take place at the Belle Vernon Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to the BEVERLY C.
