Veteran of the War of 1812, Missouri State Senator, Speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives, Member of the State Veterans Association Local 6175, and Lawyer for 60 years.N.W. Watkins was the son of Captain Henry Watkins (1758-1829) and Elizabeth (Hudson) Clay Watkins (1750-1829) who was previously married to the Rev. John Clay and was the mother of sixteen children, including statesman Sen. Henry Clay. N.W. Watkins married Eliza Margaret Watson (1810-1878), a daughter of Goah Watson of New Madrid, Missouri. Gravesite Details

His tall obelus headstone was paid for by the State of Missouri Senate in respect for his services to the state of Missouri. In 2005, the tombstone received a professional cleaning before a horary ceremony a few weeks later.
