Daughters of early school leader, William Beye, dead
Two daughters of William Beye, after whom the school at 230 Ontario st., Oak Park is named, died within three days of each other earlier this month and memorial services for them were conducted the week of Jan. 14.
First to go was Faith Beye Smeeth of Naperville who died Jan. 14. She was the widow of Harwood Edmund Smeeth of Oak Park; mother of Harwood E. Jr. of Houston, William B., of Hartland, Wis., and Charles M., of Naperville, and grandmother of 15.
She was born in Oak Park, lived here many years and was interested in music, especially in the theatre.
Marian Beye Hurlbut died Jan. 17 in Geneva. She was the widow of Dr. Charles Hovey Hurlbut of Evanston; mother of David of California and John H. of Florida; sister of Helen Beye Hamilton of River Forest, and grandmother of two.
She was born in Oak Park and taught English and mathematics in Oshkosh (Wis.) Normal before her marriage. She was president of the League of Women Voters when the village manager form of government was adopted in Oak Park.
Their father, William (Nellie C.) Beye served on the elementary school board from 1890 to 1895 and was chairman of its finance and audit committee. Born in Germany he was deputy Cook county treasurer in 1883. He died in 1896.
