Jesse Lard was born in South Carolina; son of Josiah Lard, Sr. Jesse Lard (as Leard) married Mary Edwards on March 6, 1822 in Lawrence Co. MS. Jesse and Mary Lard had 3 sons, Abraham, Thomas and Victor. After Mary's death in 1827, Jesse Lard married Susan Richardson and moved his family to Smith County, MS. Their sons, Abraham and Thomas, moved to Smith County with them but their youngest son, Victor, remained in Lawrence County with the Edwards family.

In the 1850 census of Smith Co., MS, Jesse and Susan Lard were listed with 8 children: Polly (20), Elijah (18), Josiah (16), Martha (11), John (9), Rebecca (7), Harmon (3) and Sally (1). Their son, Singleton Laird was born in 1854. All were born in Mississippi.

In the 1860 census of Smith Co., Jesse and Susan Laird were counted in Smith Co. adjacent to his son, Thomas Laird and his wife Susan. In the 1870 Census of Smith Co. Thomas and Susie Parkman Lard were still there, indicating Jesse and Susan Lard had probably died before the 1870 Census.
