Henry Metzger was the son of Adam Metzger and Anna Weinheimer. He married Olga Moehrig on August 23,1921 in St. Leo's Catholic Church, in San Antonio, Texas. The couple had three daughters. Henry Metzger spent his childhood and youth on a farm on the Comfort Highway, five miles from Fredericksburg. He received his schooling in a little red schoolhouse, except for one year in the Parochial School in Fredericksburg. He remained on the farm to help his parents until he decided to make teaching his profession. In 1912 he attended the San Marcos Normal School. The following year he taught in the Converse Community and then for five years in the Salatrillo Community. During the First World War he held a Civil Service position, but teaching had a greater fascination for him, so he resumed teaching in 1920 as principal at Poth. He worked on and acquired his BA Degree during the summer sessions at the San Marcos State Teacher's College during the ears 1921-1928. In 1921 he married and assumed the principalship at Converse and held it until 1950; then he bought a home in San Antonio and was employed as a teacher by the Edgewood Independent School District.
