Paula Anna Fredricka Schmidt

Paula Schmidt, 84 of Corvallis, passed away Friday, April 27, at the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center.

She was born January 13, 1923 in Palmer, Kansas the daughter of John and Maria (Moorman) Beikman. Paula lost her mother when she was only two years old and was raised by her grandparents. At the age of 17 she came out to Eugene, OR and graduated from high school there. After graduation Paula worked for the Phone Company and meet a young man named Walter Schmidt who had recently returned from the military. The couple was married on Easter Sunday March 28, 1948 at Grace Lutheran Church in Eugene, OR. Walt moved Paula to his home town, Corvallis, and in 1959 they opened what is now known as Schmidt's Garden Center. She was very involved in the day to day operations of the business. She also was past president of the Ladies Aide and involved in The Ladies Missionary League at Zion Lutheran Church. She started the band program at the Zion Lutheran School and was very involved with 4H in the school teaching sewing and cooking. Paula very much enjoyed; gardening, canning, crocheting, sewing, cooking , and she loved flowers.

She is survived by her husband Walter Schmidt of Corvallis, OR. Daughters; Patty Schmidt and husband Daniel McCabe of Portland, OR., and Susan and husband Timothy of Belchertown, MA. a brother Arthur Beikman of Eugene, OR and grandchildren; Jill Wacker of Gary, IN. Brian and wife Adriane of Reno, NV. and Mollie McCabe of Newberg, OR.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 3, at 1:30 P.M. at Zion Lutheran Church in Corvallis with burial to follow at Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Cemetery for the Paving Project or the charity of donors choice and sent in care of the funeral home.
