Don Lamb, 83, Carthage, Mo., passed away Friday, June 5, 2009, at his home with his family at his bedside.


Don was born Jan. 24, 1926, in Girard, Kan., the son of Leonard William Lamb and Ida May (Thompson) Lamb. Don grew up in Girard and graduated from Girard High School, Class of 1944. He married Helen Johnson on Aug. 25, 1946, in Pittsburg, Kan. She survives.


He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving during World War II as a radio operator aboard the U.S.S. Mount Olympus (AGC-8). He was honored to be present for the signing of the peace treaty with Japan, at Pearl Harbor.


Don and his father operated a Firestone store for several years in Girard, and later he became a salesman for Butler Paper Company, retiring in 1988.


He and his wife came to Carthage in 1964, from Clinton, Mo. Don loved his family, golfing and the horse races.


Survivors include his wife, Helen, of the home; a son of Carthage; three daughters; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.


Don was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Rosalie Duncan. Visitation were held June 10, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Graveside services were be held June 11, in the Girard City Cemetery, Girard, Kan.
