Honduran Statesman. He served as the President of Honduras from January 27, 1982 to January 27, 1986. He practiced medicine before going into the political field. He was active in the Liberal Party and became its leader in 1979. After the military agreed to restore civilian rule in 1980, he was elected president the next year. He served in this office for four years before stepping down in 1986. During his tenure, he promoted the democratic process and moderate economic reform while cooperating with a United States military buildup in response to the Sandinista rise in Nicaragua, which included a substantial increase in the Honduran military as well as support of the Nicaraguan contras in Honduras. He passed away due to cardiac issues.
