Clifford "Neil" Newman, 86, of Columbus, Nebraska, died Friday, December 14, 2018, at his home at Prairie Village in Columbus.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 19 at 10:30 AM, at First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Rev. Cindi Stewart officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Wednesday from 9:30 AM until service time at the church. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 AM on Wednesday at the church. Memorials are suggested as those of the family choice.

Clifford “Neil” Newman was born August 20, 1932, in Ballagh, Nebraska, to William “Clifford” and Dorothy (Ballagh) Newman. He attended District 11 School in Ballagh and graduated from Burwell High School, Burwell, Nebraska, in 1950. Neil furthered his education at Commercial Extension Business School in Omaha, Nebraska, from 1950 to 1952. On December 21, 1952, Neil was united in marriage to Phyllis Johnson in Burwell. Neil served in the United States Army from February 11, 1953 to February 10, 1955. After his military service, Neil worked for R. W. Kerr Plastics in Hastings, Nebraska, before moving to Columbus in 1958 where he began his career with Dale Electronics. Due to a brain aneurysm, Neil was forced into early retirement in 1975.

Neil was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Keystone Group, and delivered Meals on Wheels for the Columbus Senior Center for a number of years. He enjoyed bowling, dancing, gardening, football, going to Burwell rodeos, square dancing, and spending time with family. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Grandson – Nick French of Chicago, IL
Great Grandchildren – Chloe Newman, Jackson Newman, Finnegan Furtaw, and Elliot Furtaw
