Mrs. Carden was born in Wagener, South Carolina, January 23, 1909, the eldest daughter of loving parents, Jacob Plannie Gantt and Rosa Belle Jones Gantt. She grew up loving school, singing, and playing the piano. After high school, she won a scholarship to Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC, and in 1932, she graduated with a double major in history and English. To gain additional work skills during depression era years, she later attended Durham Business College. She married Iley Knox Carden of Durham, NC in 1941. They were married for forty-four years. They had five children who were the delight of her life.
Mrs. Carden expressed her musical and literary talents by teaching piano lessons; playing and singing in the church choir; writing at least two volumes of poetry; and in her later years, she wrote a book. A devoted Christian, she was a member of McMannen United Methodist Church of Durham. After her youngest child was in school, Mrs. Carden worked at Duke Hospital and later at the Department of Social Services. She retired in 1974.
