December 15, 2018

Fred Ellis, 94, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 15, 2018.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Reba H. Ellis; children, Brenda Ellis, Fred Ellis II, Kim Ellis-Littlefield and husband, Ernie Littlefield; his grandson, the light of his life, Jason Ellis; great-grandchildren, Alexa, Lakyn and Mason and their mother, DaRee; siblings, Ed Ellis (Jeanette), Melvin Ellis, David Ellis and Bobby Ellis (Susan); and numerous nieces and nephews.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, B.A. Ellis and Lisa Ellis; two brothers, R.A. Ellis and James Ellis; and two sisters, Margaret Wiggins and Mary Sacre.

He owned and operated Truck Sales Inc., a Diamond Rio Dealership for more than 35 years. Many Saturday night dinners throughout the years were enjoyed with a group of their very special friends. For years you would find Fred riding his Schwinn all over town. He would always stop to chat with anyone that would listen. Fred spent countless hours in his vegetable garden with two great friends helping, Shannon, Will and the ground hog.

Fred was a lifetime member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church and generously support the Parish. He was a Faithful Navigator of the Knights of Columbus Grand Knight 4th Degree Roanoke Assembly #562; a member of the VFW; a veteran of the Marine K Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Division; and served in World War II, serving in the South Pacific and ranked as a Corporal. Fred also volunteered at the RAM House and was a past recipient of the Brotherhood Award of Conference of Christians and Jews.

Our father was a proud man, a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and best friend. You will forever be in our hearts. We love you and we will miss you.

Special thanks is given to his wonderful caregivers, Peggy Perrin, Christine Gibson, Debbie Lee and Sandy Messer. Our family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Robert Keeley, Dr. Austin and Dr. Jamison for their excellent and compassionate care for our father.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, December 19, 2018, at Oakey’s Roanoke Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be conducted at noon on Thursday, December 20, 2018, at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Andrew’s Cemetery.

Those who so desire, may make memorial donations to the American Heart Association.
