July 14, 1927 December 16, 2018 Dorothy T. Caldwell, 91, of Roanoke, Va., and formerly of Botetourt, Va., passed away suddenly Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Lewis Gale Medical Center. Dorothy was born July 14, 1927 in Botetourt County and was the daughter of the late Arthur and Lethia Boothe Thomas Horton. She lived much of her life in Botetourt and the last 30 years in Roanoke. Dorothy retired from Friendship Manor after 27 years of service and was a member of Hollins Road Baptist Church. She enjoyed working with her flowers and watching birds and butterflies. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Heber Caldwell; step-father, Russell Horton; son, Larry Caldwell; brothers, Garman, Lusby, and Jack Thomas; sister, Daisy Armstrong; and long-time companion of 47 years, Buford Rakes; and is survived by her daughters, Virginia Johnson of Hardy and Debora Caldwell of Roanoke; sons, Ira Caldwell and Robert Caldwell of Roanoke, Nelson Caldwell, Ronald Caldwell, and Michael Caldwell all of Troutville; grandchildren, Michelle (J.R.) Gerst, Mason Caldwell, and Bobby Caldwell; great-granddaughters, Jasmine Caldwell and Bella Caldwell; brother, Bernard Thomas; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Mom was a very caring and loving "mother" and best friend to her family. She had a warm and gentle smile, kind heart, and was so concerned and thoughtful of others. Although our hearts are breaking, God chose to take her in his care. We love and miss her dearly. She will always forever be in our hearts. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, December 20, 2018 at Rader Funeral Home, 630 Roanoke Road Daleville with the Rev. G. Mark Washington officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Union Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at the funeral home.
