At the age of twenty, Johnny joined the United States Marine Corps. He showed off his shooting skills by being awarded the M-1 Rifle Marksmanship Badge. Although he was known for his sense of humor and enjoyed a good prank, he was surprisingly awarded the Good Conduct Medal as well during his six years of service.
Johnny had an affinity for the outdoors. He was a prolific hunter, fisherman, and gardener. After some time and stubbornness wore off, he fell in love with his many dogs. He enjoyed shooting pool and sharing comradery with his friends and family. During one chance encounter with a foreign exchange student, he starting speaking her native tongue. To the utter surprise of his family, Johnny was fluent in Japanese!
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Phyllis Tate, daughter Lissa Morrow Kilgas, brothers Everett and Jimmy Morrow, and sister Jeanette Bundren. Those left behind to cherish memories include his daughters Karen Grant and Angela (Albert) Tatum, brother Gary (Sheila) Morrow, grandchildren Mark (Tiffany) Flowers, Jessica Flowers, Alex (Alanna) Troy, Machaylah Troy, and Camie Troy, as well as three great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.
