James Walker Lewis is the son of Thomas H. and Jedidah (Whitehouse) Lewis of Buckingham County, VA.

His father died when James was only two, and soon after, James, his mother and three brothers headed west to Missouri where they settled in Howard County and set to farming. There James grew to adulthood.

On Oct 7, 1852, James married Virgina V. Bartholow of Maryland and the two of them had three children, two sons and a daughter.
