Arthur Joye (Skipper) Jenkins Jr., husband of Sarah Ann Hanckel Jenkins, passed away at his home. He was born in Charleston, SC to Elise Cart and Arthur Joye Jenkins. He was a graduate of Rivers High School and a 1955 Electrical Engineering graduate of The Citadel having also served as a member of the Summerall Guards. He was commissioned upon graduation as a Lieutenant in the Air Force and then served in the Air Force Reserve, retiring with the rank of Captain. Having lost his father at only 9 months old he was blessed with 2 wonderful and loving stepfathers, Colonel Ralph M. Byrd and Charles Neyle Robertson. He spent many happy summers at the family home, Brick House Plantation (Edisto Island) boating, shrimping, fishing and hunting and later enjoyed sharing the same activities with his own children and grandchildren. He was a harbor pilot for 35 years, retiring in 1993 and was past president of the Charleston Branch Harbor Pilots Association. He was a member and past Commodore of Carolina Yacht Club and a member and past Governor of The Society of Colonial Wars in the State of South Carolina. He was also a member of the following: Cathedral Church of St Luke and St Paul, St. Cecelia Society, Society of the Cincinnati of the State of South Carolina, St. Andrew’s Society, St. David’s Society, Agricultural Society of South Carolina, Fort Sumter Camp of The Sons of Confederate Veterans and Country Club of Charleston. He leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Sarah Ann Hanckel Jenkins, 1 daughter, 1 son and his wife, 1 granddaughter, 1 grandson, 2 step-grandchildren, 1 sister-in-law, 1 nephew, 2 nieces, 5 great nephews, 1 great niece, many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins in both the Jenkins and Hanckel families as well as many on the waterways. He was preceded by 1 sister, Joye Jenkins Chambers; 1 brother, Rev. Ralph M. Byrd and 2 nieces, Joye (Jenks) Jordan and Elise S. Smith.
