He led his company through it's nine month enlistment, and was honorably mustered out on May 15, 1863. When Pennsylvania raised Emergency Militia regiments in June 1863 to counter the threat posted by the Confederate invasion during the Gettysburg Campaign, Norris Yarnall was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 29th Regiment of Emergency Troops. He served from June 19, 1863 to August 1, 1863.
