Matthew James Arnold, 63, of Vincent, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, December 14, 2018 at Camden Clark Medical Center in Parkersburg, West Virginia.

He was born on May 17, 1955, in Marietta, Ohio, to Mark William and Ruth Margaret Pottmeyer Arnold. Matt is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Barbara Sue Thornberry, who he married on May 27, 1978, along with son Jason and his wife Farrah of Fishers, Indiana, daughter Nancy, of Vincent, Ohio, and grandchildren Eli Cameron and Zoe Delphine Arnold. He is also survived by sisters Suzie Fleming (Ralph) of Parkersburg, West Virginia, Marty Sabic (Ken) of Phoenix, Arizona, Becky Cox (Tom) of Marietta, Ohio, and Diane Leber (Bud) of Spokane, Washington; brothers Ken Arnold (Evelyn) of Yelm, Washington, and Tim Arnold (Kathie) of Fleming, Ohio; sister-in-law Diane Arnold of Marietta, Ohio; several nieces and nephews; and his loving father and mother-in-law, Levi Wayne and Hazel Thornberry of Vincent, Ohio.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, sister, Pamela, and brother Luke, and a special nephew, Mark Fleming.

Matt was a 1973 graduate of Warren High School and Washington County Career Center, where he was a member of the welding program. He was employed for many years as a welder and foreman at Williamstown Fabricators, Inc. before his retirement in 2016. His excellent welding skills were known throughout his community, and he was always willing to use his skills to help his neighbors and friends. He especially enjoyed repairing farm equipment.

He was a lifelong and faithful member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Churchtown, dedicated to the faith that was passed on to him by his parents. He was a fantastic husband, father, and grandfather who cherished his family and loved them selflessly. He especially loved being Papa to his precious grandchildren Eli and Zoe. He was hardworking, talented, and a reliable friend to all those he knew. He enjoyed working on his farm, which he maintained beautifully and with great pride, as well as gathering firewood, caring for his donkeys and goats, gardening, woodworking, and cooking. He was skilled, caring, helpful, and always present for his family, who loved him deeply and were grateful to have him in their lives.

Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Churchtown, with The Rev. Timothy Davison celebrating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Barlow Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, with the Rosary being recited at 3:00 p.m.
