His next of kin was noted as his aunt, Mrs. Marion Duffy who resided in Burlington, Vermont.

Elwin served as a Sergeant & Tail Gunner on B-17F #42-3437, 339th Bomber Squadron, 96th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Chittenden County, Vermont prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 1, 1942 in Rutland, Vermont. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in construction and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-3437 took off from Station 138, Snetterton Heath, England on a bombing mission targeting the Hispano-Suisa complex near Paris, France. Over their target they were hit by enemy ground anti-aircraft flak and exploded. They crashed near Paris during the war.

Elwin was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

He was first interred in the New Cemetery at Virofly, Paris and was later repatriated here in 1951.
