Laura Cecelia Johnson Holmes was born on October 12, 1942 in Newark, New Jersey at St. Barnabas Hospital, daughter of the late Fleming and Lucille Green Johnson. She was the second of four children: the late Fleming "TJ" Johnson, Eleanor Johnson, and Charles Johnson. Laura attended school in Hoboken, New Jersey. The Johnson family moved to Newark, New Jersey where she attended the Newark Public School system. She graduated from Southside High School (now Malcolm X Shabazz High School) in Newark New Jersey. She was an avid member of Union Gospel Tabernacle where she served as an Usher and sang in the Young People Holiness Association Choir.
Laura met the love of her life, John Lee Holmes in the church. On June 6, 1964, Laura married John and was blessed with two children, John and Michelle.
She employed as a School Administrator at Dayton Street Elementary School in Newark, New Jersey. Previously, Laura briefly worked as a Seamstress after her high school graduation.
In 1975, Laura and John moved to Rahway, New Jersey to raise their family. She was a homemaker and a babysitter for kids in the area. John introduced Laura to his family church where she became a member of Guiding Star United Holiness Church in Roselle, New Jersey. S She served as a member and became President of the Usher board.
On Sunday, July 23, 2017, Laura Cecelia Holmes entered eternal rest at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, New Jersey at the age of 74.
She leaves behind in love, her husband of 53 years, John Lee Holmes; son, John Christopher Holmes; daughter, Michelle L. Holmes; sister, Eleanor Johnson; brother, Charles "Chicky" Johnson; granddaughter, Alycia M. Holmes; nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces and in-laws; a host of dear relatives and friends.
