Died in Kennett Square, PA on January 19, 2006. She had been in failing health for several years. She was born in Dover MA on Sept. 10, 1915 and grew up in Needham. She and her extended family spent their summers in Marion MA. She attended the Charles River School in Dover graduated from the Foxcroft School in Middleburg VA. She studied drawing and sculpture in New York City before marrying Dr. John Woodruff Ewell of Rowley MA in 1941. From 1946 the family lived in Northford and later in New Haven CT, where Dr. Ewell worked at Yale University. Mrs. Ewell was active in the Creative Arts Workshop and in Dwight Hall. From 1966 the Ewells spent part of each year in Italy, first in Rome and later at their renovated farmhouse in Tuscany. In Rome, Mrs. Ewell studied with the noted sculptor, Helena Zelezny. In 1989, they moved from New Haven to the Crosslands/Cartmel retirement community in Kennett Square. Dr. Ewell died in 2001. Louise Ewell is survived by her sister, Violet Amory Eaton of Providence RI and her brother John Austin Amory of Freeport ME, and by her three sons and their families: John W. Ewell Jr. of Berkeley CA; Peter T. Ewell of Nairobi, Kenya; and Charles A. Ewell of Lecchi-in-Chianti (Siena), Italy. There are six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
